Language is a system of communication used by humans to convey meaning and express thoughts, ideas, and emotions. It involves the use of words, sounds, gestures, or symbols that are agreed upon by a community of speakers to represent certain concepts, objects, or actions. Language can be both spoken and written, and it can vary in form, structure, and complexity across different cultures and societies. Language also serves as a means of social interaction and cultural identity, as it reflects the values, beliefs, and traditions of a particular group or community.

Learning a language can be an enriching and rewarding experience, but it can also be a challenging one. Here are some tips on how to learn a language:

  1. Start with the basics: Begin with the fundamental concepts such as basic vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures.
  2. Practice regularly: Regular practice is key to learning a language. It’s important to practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the language you want to learn.
  3. Immerse yourself in the language: Surround yourself with the language as much as possible. Watch TV shows, movies, or listen to music in the language you’re learning. Try to think in the language, and use it as often as possible.
  4. Find a language partner: Find someone who speaks the language fluently to practice speaking and listening with. You can also join language exchange programs or online communities to connect with other language learners and native speakers.
  5. Be patient and persistent: Learning a language takes time and effort, so it’s important to be patient and persistent. Don’t get discouraged by mistakes or setbacks, and keep practicing.

Based on this background, SMAIT Al Haraki as a formal education unit organizes FUNTASTIC activity (For Understanding Languages from Native Effectively) every year. This activity is carried out to equip SMAIT Al Haraki students in getting used to listening and speaking directly with native speakers. In the first semester of the academic year 2022/2023, FUNTASTIC invited three guest teachers to study English and Japanese. Then in the second semester, they invited two more guest teachers to study English and Arabic.

In the second semester, FUNTASTIC was held on Monday to Tuesday, 20 to 21 February 2023. The topic for English session were how to make a good procedure text and announcement. Students not only got basic materials, they also had to create a poster or flyer using procedure text and announcement. Moreover, they were given a chance to present their works in front of the class. Beside that, the Arabic session discussed about family. Students practiced to speak up more by conducting some conversation in front of the class.

The natives were able to deliver the material splendidly and succeeded in making students excited about the learning. Hopefully, students can be more confident in using English and Arabic as they were delighted to be enthusiastic in FUNTASTIC.
